Square for Retail is Square’s point of sale configured for stores: an item library with variations and SKUs, barcode scanning, low-stock alerts and stock that stays synced with your online store. Inventory counts, vendors, purchase orders, barcode labels and cost-of-goods reporting come with the paid plans. Per Square’s published pricing, checked October 2026, plans run $0, $49 or $149 per month per location, with in-person card rates of 2.6%, 2.5% or 2.4% plus 15¢. If you track real inventory, Square Plus is usually where Square for Retail starts paying off. Pricing can change — confirm current rates with Square.
What does Square for Retail pricing look like in 2026?
Square for Retail pricing comes down to two numbers: the monthly fee per location and the rate on each sale. Below is Square’s published pricing, checked October 2026; it can change, so confirm current rates before you sign up. Every rate by payment type is in our Square fees breakdown.
A worked example on those published rates: $20,000 a month in tap, dip and swipe sales on Square hardware, across 800 transactions (a $25 average ticket). Square Free: $520 + $120 = $640 a month. Plus: $500 + $120 + $49 = $669. Premium: $480 + $120 + $149 = $749. Square takes its fee from the full ticket, tax and tip included.
On rates alone, Plus’s 0.1-point discount covers its $49 fee only at about $49,000 a month in in-person card sales. Online, the rate drops from 3.3% to 2.9%, so about $12,250 a month in online card sales covers it. For most stores, the case for Plus is the inventory tools, not the rate.
There are no locked-in contracts, and businesses processing over $250,000 a year can ask Square about custom pricing. Square sets those rates — not us.
| Square Free | Square Plus | Square Premium | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | $0 per location | $49 per location | $149 per location |
| Tap, dip or swipe | 2.6% + 15¢ | 2.5% + 15¢ | 2.4% + 15¢ |
| Online and invoice card payments | 3.3% + 30¢ | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Keyed or card on file | 3.5% + 15¢ | 3.5% + 15¢ | 3.5% + 15¢ |
| Gift card load fee | 2.5% | 2.5% | 0% |
| Text marketing | Not available | 500 texts/mo, then 3¢ each | 2,500 texts/mo, then 1.5¢ each |
| Phone support | Weekdays 6am–6pm PT, first 90 days | Weekdays 6am–6pm PT | 24/7 |
If you don’t choose a plan when a 30-day trial ends, Square moves you to Square Free — and dropping from Plus to Free removes features such as barcode label printing and multi-location stock management.
How does Square inventory management work for retail?
It starts with the item library. Scan a GTIN barcode or search to create items automatically, import your catalog from Excel or CSV, and let Square generate missing SKUs. Option sets build variations in bulk, and each variation carries its own cost, price and SKU.
With tracking on, counts move with every POS sale, invoice and shipped online order, and Advanced Stock Tracking follows each variation. Low-stock alerts are set up in Square Dashboard and emailed 90 minutes after each location’s closing time.
Paid plans add full or cycle counts with an iPhone or iPad camera, bulk intake by scanning, and an inventory history you can export to CSV. Unit costs feed cost-of-goods reports calculated first in, first out. New to this? See our retail POS inventory guide.
| Feature | Free | Plus | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create items by scan or import; auto-generated SKUs | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Low-stock alerts | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Inventory counts, bulk intake, inventory history | — | Yes | Yes |
| Barcode label printing | — | Yes | Yes |

| Product bundles and exchanges | — | Yes | Yes |
| Transfer orders and cross-location returns | — | — | Yes |

Plan your option sets (size, color, scent) before you build or import the catalog, and give every variation a SKU. No SKU, no scannable barcode label.
How do barcodes, vendors and purchase orders work in Square?
Barcode labels need Plus or Premium. Print them from Square Dashboard, the Square Retail POS app on an iPhone or iPad, or Square Register; each label carries a SKU or GTIN barcode and can show price, item name and variation. Square lists DYMO LabelWriter printers (the 550 takes only genuine DYMO labels), Zebra ZD411D and ZD410 printers, and Avery sheet labels on any inkjet or laser printer.
Vendors and purchase orders also need Plus or Premium, and Square’s pricing table puts purchase order import and a vendor sales report on Premium. A purchase order moves like this:
- Vendors: once a variation appears on a vendor’s order, it’s linked to that vendor and that vendor’s cost.
- Build: in Square Dashboard or the Retail POS app on iPhone or iPad — up to 500 unique items per order, in whole-number quantities only.
- Send: email it to the vendor, or save it as a PDF or CSV.
- Receive: in bulk or partially, marking lines “Won’t fulfill” or “Damaged.” Shipping and other fees added at receiving are spread across the items in your COGS report.
- Costs: receiving saves each item’s unit cost automatically, and the “View unit cost” permission hides costs from staff.
Square Terminal can’t create purchase orders or print barcode labels. If receiving and labeling happen at the counter, put an iPad on Square Stand or a Square Register there.
Which Square hardware works best for a retail store?
Pick hardware by how much back-office work happens at the counter. Prices are Square’s published prices, checked October 2026, and financing is offered by Block, Inc. at 15% APR, subject to credit approval.
Square Shop also lists a Register Retail Kit from $1,799, a Honeywell barcode scanner at $169 and a Zebra ZD411 label printer at $349 (prints from Square Dashboard, Square Stand or Square Register). Lone Star Payments doesn’t stock, ship, finance or warranty Square hardware — you buy it from Square or a retailer, and we help you choose it and set it up. See our Square hardware guide, or our Square Reader guide for pop-ups and markets.
| Device | Price | Strengths for retail | Know before you buy |

Does Square for Retail sync with your online store and other locations?
Yes — it’s one of Square’s strongest arguments. Square’s website builder (renamed from Square Online to “websites”) pulls products from your Square POS, and Square says stock is managed across locations and channels so you don’t oversell. Pickup and local delivery, including free in-store pickup, are on every plan.
Square’s pricing table lists Shopify sync through Thrive Inventory and Wix store sync on every plan, and items can be listed on Google, Instagram and Facebook. Plus and Premium add retail preorders, abandoned cart emails and a custom domain; Premium adds real-time shipping rates. More on our Square Online page.
For multiple stores, Plus and Premium bill per location — three stores run $147 a month on Plus, $447 on Premium — while Square Free adds locations at no extra cost. Square’s pricing table puts transfer orders and cross-location returns on Premium; one Square feature page also describes transfers under Plus, so confirm on your plan. Prices can be overridden by location.
Is Square POS for retail a good fit for liquor stores, boutiques and convenience stores?
Here’s how Square lines up for common Texas store types. Loyalty and email and text marketing need Plus or Premium (see Square marketing and loyalty).
- Liquor and wine stores: age-restriction prompts and automatic bottle deposits on every plan, barcode and ID scanning, automatic discounts by item, category, quantity or timeframe, and counts that stay accurate when you sell in a different quantity than you buy. Online shipping can be limited to states where you’re legally allowed to ship.
- Boutiques and apparel: size-and-color variations, custom item grids, returns (exchanges on Plus and Premium), buy online and pick up in store, and selling on Instagram and Google. See our boutique playbook.
- Convenience and grocery: search, scan or weigh at checkout, ID scanning for alcohol and tobacco, cycle counts (Plus and Premium), and EBT for SNAP-eligible items at a published 1.8% + 5¢ — Square says it waives that fee while EBT is in beta, through fall 2026, so check whether the waiver is still running when you sign up.
- Gift shops and garden centers: custom item grids, in-store pickup, gift cards that don’t expire (2.5% load fee on Free and Plus, 0% on Premium), and workshops booked through Square Appointments.
Age prompts and ID scans are checkout tools, not a compliance program. Train every cashier on when to card.
Who should skip Square for Retail?
Compare first if any of these sound like you — Square vs Clover is a good place to start.
- You order in fractions: Square purchase orders take whole numbers only, up to 500 unique items each.
- You run several stores on a tight budget: transfer orders and cross-location returns are Premium-only on Square’s pricing table — $745 a month for five stores, before processing.
- You want features à la carte: Square doesn’t add or remove individual features between plans; you buy the tier.
- You process serious volume: past $250,000 a year, check a flat rate against Square’s custom pricing, interchange-plus or our dual pricing program. Here’s how processing pricing models differ.
- Your internet drops for long stretches: offline payments are declined if the device doesn’t reconnect within 24 hours of the first one, and Tap to Pay doesn’t work offline.
- You want 24/7 phone support without paying for Premium: Square’s phone support runs weekdays 6am–6pm PT on Plus, and on Square Free only for the first 90 days; 24/7 support is a Premium feature ($149 a month per location). We’re a call away at (214) 838-1818 on any plan, but account, payout and underwriting questions still go to Square.

Does Square inventory management sync with Shopify?
Square’s pricing table lists Shopify sync through Thrive Inventory on every plan, keeping your Square catalog and stock matched with a Shopify store, plus Wix store sync. Square’s own website builder also runs straight off your Square item library, no connector needed. Check Thrive Inventory’s own terms before you rely on it.
Can Square print barcode labels?
Yes, on Square Plus or Premium. Labels print from Square Dashboard, the Retail POS app on a compatible iPhone or iPad, or Square Register, using the DYMO, Zebra and Avery options Square lists. Each item needs a SKU for a scannable barcode, and Square can generate missing SKUs.
Is Square POS good for a liquor store?
It can be. Square’s wine and liquor tools include age-restriction prompts and automatic bottle deposits on every plan, plus ID scanning and automatic discounts. Purchase orders, vendors and inventory counts need Plus or Premium. We sell other retail systems too, so we’ll compare before you commit.
Can I switch to Square for Retail from Lightspeed or Shopify POS?
Yes. Square says sellers switching from Lightspeed Retail, Shopify POS or similar systems can bulk import their inventory, and the item library accepts Excel or CSV imports. Plus and Premium each include a 30-day free trial. We handle the import with you where Square supports it.
