Square Online — which Square now calls “websites” — is Square’s website builder and online store. You can build a single ordering page or a multi-page store, list unlimited items or import them from Square POS, and take orders for pickup, local delivery or shipping, with online and in-store sales synced automatically. On Square Free there’s no monthly fee and online card sales cost 3.3% + 30¢; Square Plus ($49/mo. per location) and Premium ($149/mo. per location) drop that to 2.9% + 30¢. That’s Square’s published pricing, checked October 2026, and it can change.
What is Square Online, and why does Square call it “websites” now?
Square Online is Square’s website builder and eCommerce tool. Square says it renamed it “websites” to better highlight the website-building tools, and that every feature is still included — only the name changed.
You pick one of two formats: a single ordering page for a menu or short product list, or a multi-page eCommerce website. Square says no coding is necessary, and Plus and Premium add expanded site customization, which Square says includes over 100 million premium stock photos.
If you already sell in person on Square, the tie to your POS is the real advantage: one item library, synced sales and no double entry. Comparing other ways to take payments online? See our guide to gateways and checkout options.
How much does Square Online cost in 2026?
Every Square plan includes the website builder. On Square Free, Square says there are no monthly fees or startup costs — just a processing fee when you make a sale. Square Plus and Square Premium charge a monthly fee per location for a lower online rate and more features; each has a free 30-day trial and no locked-in contract.
- International cards: cards issued outside the US add 1.5% on top of the base rate.
- Transfers: standard next-business-day transfers are free; Square’s help center lists instant transfers at 1.95% per transfer.
- Delivery: the delivery provider sets its own on-demand delivery fee, and Square’s online processing fee still applies to the order.
- No charge: Square lists no fee for chargebacks and dispute management, PCI compliance support or early termination.
| Square Free | Square Plus | Square Premium | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | $0 per location | $49 per location | $149 per location |
| Online card payments | 3.3% + 30¢ | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| In-person tap, dip or swipe | 2.6% + 15¢ | 2.5% + 15¢ | 2.4% + 15¢ |
| Keyed or card on file | 3.5% + 15¢ | 3.5% + 15¢ | 3.5% + 15¢ |
| Afterpay | 6% + 30¢ | 6% + 30¢ | 6% + 30¢ |
| Phone support | 6am–6pm PT M–F, first 90 days | 6am–6pm PT M–F | 24/7 |
These are Square’s published prices, checked October 2026 — not Lone Star Payments prices — and Square can change them. Square takes its fee from the full transaction, including tax and tip, and existing sellers may be priced differently depending on their current plan. Confirm current rates in your Square Dashboard; the full rate sheet is in Square fees explained.
When does Square Plus pay for itself on an online store?
On Square’s published online rates, the 30¢ per order is the same on Free and Plus, so the only difference is the percentage: 3.3% versus 2.9%. That 0.4-point gap has to cover Plus’s $49 monthly fee.
$49 ÷ 0.4% = $12,250. For one location selling only online, that’s about $12,250 a month in online card sales before the lower Plus rate covers the fee. Below that, Free costs less.
- Assumptions: one location, $40 average order, US-issued cards, no Afterpay or delivery fees. Free = sales × 3.3% + orders × 30¢; Plus = sales × 2.9% + orders × 30¢ + $49.
- In-person sales move the line: Plus also trims in-person card rates from 2.6% to 2.5%, so a business selling at the counter and online reaches break-even sooner.
- Premium is a features call: its online rate matches Plus, so you’re paying for 24/7 phone support, real-time shipping rates and its 2.4% + 15¢ in-person rate.
| Monthly online card sales | Orders | Square Free cost | Square Plus cost (incl. $49 fee) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $8,000 | 200 | $324 | $341 |
| $12,000 | 300 | $486 | $487 |
| $20,000 | 500 | $810 | $779 |
| $40,000 | 1,000 | $1,620 | $1,509 |

How does Square online ordering work for restaurants and food trucks?
For food businesses, Square offers an online ordering profile, which Square says runs on any plan with no added monthly fee and takes orders for free pickup or on-demand delivery without marketplace commissions. Your menu syncs from Square POS, or you can import it from a PDF or an existing marketplace.
Orders land on your Square POS and on your kitchen printer or Square KDS, and profiles support multiple locations, order tipping and digital wallets. Square KDS isn’t available on Square Free: the KDS app is $30 a month per device on Plus and $20 on Premium, on top of the plan fee (Square’s published pricing, checked October 2026).
- QR code ordering (Plus and Premium): each code maps to a table, walk-up window or parking spot, and orders from the same table combine into one ticket.
- Order with Google (all plans): customers can order straight from Google Maps and Search.
- Delivery apps in one place (all plans): third-party order management pulls in orders from delivery partners like DoorDash and Grubhub.
- Sold-out items (Plus and Premium): item availability marks an item sold out on every channel in real time.
Get your modifiers right before you launch online. Your menu syncs from Square POS, so a burger temperature or milk choice missing from the item library is missing online too — and the kitchen ends up calling customers back. More in Square for Restaurants and our food truck playbook.
Is the Square online store a good fit for retail and ecommerce?
For a shop already ringing sales on Square, it’s a strong fit: unlimited items with photos, descriptions and variations, stock counts that update when online orders ship (for tracked items), and free in-store pickup. For how store and web stock stay in step, see our guide to omnichannel retail inventory.
Square ecommerce tools cover what a boutique or gift shop usually needs. Every plan gets shipping labels printed in bulk with discounted US shipping rates, eGift cards on your site (Square charges a 2.5% load fee on Free and Plus and none on Premium, on top of the processing fee on the customer’s card payment) and customer accounts that track orders; Plus and Premium add scheduled product drops and flash sales.
Already selling somewhere else? Square lists Wix store sync on every plan and Shopify catalog and inventory sync through Thrive Inventory. Square’s wine and liquor page says you can allow shipping only to states where you’re legally allowed to ship. For vendors, purchase orders and barcode labels, see Square for Retail.
Real-time shipping rates at checkout are Premium-only on Square’s plan comparison. Shipping heavy or oddly sized goods on Free or Plus? Set shipping charges that cover what you actually pay to ship.
Who should skip Square Online?
Square Online is built to extend a Square POS. If that isn’t your setup, or your online sales have outgrown a flat rate, look hard before you switch.
- Established Shopify or WooCommerce stores: if your store depends on apps and themes you’ve already paid for, weigh the cost of rebuilding before you move. Square has prebuilt payment connections for WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce and Wix, and Lone Star Payments also offers NMI and Authorize.net gateways. Weighing an online-first, developer-built checkout? See Square vs Stripe for online stores.
- Businesses not on Square POS: the in-store and online sync is the headline benefit. If you’re happy on Clover, you’d be giving up the main reason to choose Square Online — see Clover through Lone Star Payments.
- Mostly phone orders: if customers call instead of browsing, a website may not be what you need. Keying their cards costs 3.5% + 15¢ on every plan, while a card payment on an invoice bills at Square’s online rate. Compare both on your typical ticket in Square Invoices.
- Memberships with class counts: Square’s help center says its subscriptions don’t support an entitlement feature, so a subscription won’t count “10 classes a month.” Square Appointments sells prepaid class packages on Plus and Premium (see Square Appointments); if that doesn’t fit your membership, you’ll need another tool.
- High online volume: a flat rate adds up as volume climbs. Square says businesses processing over $250,000 a year can ask whether they qualify for custom pricing, and we can price our other options beside it — see how processing fees work.
How do you set up a Square online store, step by step?
Here’s the order we follow when we build a Square website or ordering page with an owner. It works for do-it-yourselfers too.
- 1. Pick the plan: start on Free unless you need a Plus feature like a custom domain, QR code ordering, abandoned cart emails or Square KDS (which adds its own per-device monthly fee), or your online card sales at one location top about $12,250 a month, where Plus’s lower rate covers its fee.
- 2. Build the item library: photos, descriptions, variations, modifiers and taxes in Square POS — or a menu imported from a PDF or a marketplace.
- 3. Choose the format: a single ordering page or a multi-page store, then the design. Every plan gets the website builder; Plus and Premium add Square’s expanded site customization, including over 100 million premium stock photos.
- 4. Set fulfillment: pickup, local delivery and shipping, with ordering windows and order minimums where you need them.
- 5. Test checkout: place a test order and check the tax, tip, pickup time and receipt before a customer does.
- 6. Connect channels: Google, Instagram and Facebook — plus your own domain on Plus or Premium.
- 7. Ready the back of house: route orders to the kitchen printer — or to Square KDS on Plus or Premium — and train staff on how online orders arrive.
- 8. Go live and review: watch the first week of orders and fix whatever customers trip over.
On a legacy Square Online Plus or Premium plan? You can move to the new Square Plus or Premium plans from your Dashboard, but Square says there’s no switching back, so compare costs first. We help with setup through Square setup and support.
- The Square website builder is included on every plan, including Square Free with no monthly fee.
- Online card sales cost 3.3% + 30¢ on Free and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus ($49/mo.) and Premium ($149/mo.) per location — Square’s published pricing, checked October 2026, subject to change.
- At one location, the lower Plus online rate covers its $49 fee at about $12,250 a month in online card sales.
- Custom domains, QR code ordering, abandoned cart emails and website subscriptions need Plus or Premium; real-time shipping rates need Premium.
- Lone Star Payments sets it up with you — on-site across Dallas / Ft. Worth or remotely statewide — and runs a free side-by-side cost review.
Frequently asked questions
Is Square Online really free?
Mostly. Square Free has no monthly fee or startup cost and includes the website builder plus free hosting with an SSL certificate; you pay 3.3% + 30¢ per online card sale. A custom domain, QR code ordering, abandoned cart emails and website subscriptions need Plus ($49/mo. per location) or Premium ($149/mo. per location). That’s Square’s published pricing, checked October 2026, and it can change.
What happened to Square Online — did it change names?
Yes. Square renamed Square Online to “websites” and says the features are unchanged. If you’re on a legacy Square Online Plus or Premium plan, you can migrate to the new Square Plus or Premium plans from your Dashboard and get a prorated refund of the old hosting plan. Once you switch, Square says you can’t go back to a legacy subscription.
Can I use my own domain with the Square website builder?
Square’s plan comparison lists custom domain connect — for a domain you already own or one you buy and register — as a Square Plus and Premium feature, not a Square Free one. Square’s migration help article also notes custom domains are billed separately from the plan. If a branded address matters, budget for Plus at $49 per month per location plus the cost of the domain itself (Square’s published pricing, checked October 2026).
Does Square online ordering charge commissions?
Square says its online ordering profiles take pickup and delivery orders without marketplace commissions and with no added monthly fee, on any plan. You still pay Square’s online processing fee on each order, and on-demand delivery carries a fee set by the delivery provider, charged to the customer or to you.
Does a Square online store sync inventory with my POS?
Yes. Square says in-store and online sales stay synced automatically, with inventory managed across all locations and sales channels so you don’t oversell. Items import straight from Square POS, and tracked stock counts update from POS sales, invoices and online orders that ship.
