Square vs Stripe comes down to where you sell and who runs the tech. Square is a ready-to-run POS with its own hardware and published in-person rates of 2.6% + 15¢ (Free), 2.5% + 15¢ (Plus) or 2.4% + 15¢ (Premium). Stripe is a developer-first payments platform: 2.9% + 30¢ for online cards and 2.7% + 5¢ in person on its Terminal readers. Pick Square if you sell at a counter, table or job site and want a ready-made POS without hiring a developer; pick Stripe if your sales live in your own website or app and you have a developer. Stripe vs Square Processing Fees: Which Costs Less?
In person, it turns on your average ticket. Stripe Terminal’s percentage is 0.1 to 0.3 points higher than Square’s, but its fixed fee is 10¢ lower. The arithmetic: Stripe costs less than Square Free on tickets under $100, less than Plus under $50 and less than Premium under about $33, before Square’s monthly fee.
Within Square, Plus’s rate is 0.1 point below Free’s, which covers its $49 fee at $49,000 a month in card-present sales; Premium’s extra $100 pays off at $100,000. Our Square fees breakdown covers every rate, and our fees guide shows what a fair processing rate looks like.
On $20,000 a month at a $10 average ticket, Stripe’s rate comes to $640 against $820 on Square Free, but that $640 buys payments only, not POS software. At a $100 average ticket on $40,000 a month, Square Free and Stripe tie at $1,100.
The table below assumes one location, domestic cards, no keyed or international payments, no refunds or disputes, in-person sales taken on a card reader rather than a phone (Stripe’s Tap to Pay adds 10¢ per authorization, which would make it costlier than Square Free at any ticket size), hardware purchase costs left out and no Stripe cellular add-on. Square takes its fee from the full sale, tax and tip included.
| Scenario | Square Free | Square Plus | Square Premium | Stripe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20,000 in person, 2,000 sales ($10 average) | $520 + $300 = $820 | $500 + $300 + $49 = $849 | $480 + $300 + $149 = $929 | $540 + $100 = $640 (no POS software) |
| $40,000 in person, 400 sales ($100 average) | $1,040 + $60 = $1,100 | $1,000 + $60 + $49 = $1,109 | $960 + $60 + $149 = $1,169 | $1,080 + $20 = $1,100 |
| $30,000 online, 500 orders ($60 average) | $990 + $150 = $1,140 ($1,020 via Square’s APIs) | $870 + $150 + $49 = $1,069 | $870 + $150 + $149 = $1,169 | $870 + $150 = $1,020 |
Keyed-in cards cost more on both. On a $100 phone order, Square’s 3.5% + 15¢ comes to $3.65, and Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ plus 0.5% for a manually entered card comes to $3.70.
Is Square or Stripe Better for In-Person Sales?
For most Texas storefronts, restaurants and service counters, Square is the easier in-person system. Every plan includes the POS app and all its point-of-sale modes, with software built for restaurants, retail, services and beauty. Square hardware can also take payments offline, as long as the device reconnects within 24 hours (older 1st-generation contactless readers and Tap to Pay excluded).
In a Stripe Terminal vs Square matchup, Terminal is a strong payments layer built for businesses that develop their own POS app, use one of hundreds of third-party POS integrations, or use Stripe’s no-code option. Its readers come with SDKs for Android, iOS, JavaScript and React Native, and Stripe says Terminal accepts card brands and digital wallets across 39 markets. If you have a developer or a POS partner built on Stripe, that flexibility is the point.
Square hardware can be financed through Block, Inc. at a published 15% APR on $49 to $10,000, subject to credit approval; Texas isn’t among the six states where it’s unavailable. Stripe offers reader cellular service at $10 per reader a month. See Square hardware.
| What you need | Square | Stripe |
|---|---|---|
| Pocket reader | Contactless and chip reader, $59; magstripe reader, first one free | Reader M2 (Bluetooth), $59 |
| Phone as the reader | Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android, 2.6% + 15¢ per tap | Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android, Terminal rate plus 10¢ per authorization |
| Countertop card machine | Terminal, $299, with built-in receipt printer | Reader T600 (8-inch), $329; BBPOS WisePOS E, $249 |
| Smart handheld | Handheld, $399, with barcode scanner and camera | Reader S700, $299 (can run a custom POS app); cellular-capable S710, $299 |
| Full POS stations and kiosks | Register (2nd generation), $899; Stand, $149 (you supply the iPad); Kiosk, $149 plus the Kiosk app at $50/mo per device on Plus or $30 on Premium (not on Free) | Readers pair with the POS app you build or connect; Verifone devices listed, prices not published |
Is Stripe Better Than Square for Online Payments and Developers?
Often, yes, if online is the whole business. Stripe builds for developers first: SDKs, APIs, an MCP server and AI developer tools. Payment Links and Checkout are included, and 3D Secure and Authorization Boost cost nothing extra on standard pricing. Stripe prices currency conversion at 1%; Square’s invoices page says it doesn’t support multi-currency acceptance today. New to selling online? Start with how online checkout works.
Stripe also lists Klarna at 5.99% + 30¢, stablecoin payments at 1.5% and Link instant bank payments at 2.6% + 30¢. Square’s buy-now-pay-later option is Afterpay, at 6% + 30¢.
Square comes at online from the store side. Square Free includes a website builder with SEO tools, pickup, local delivery and shipping, with online and in-store sales and inventory synced. It also connects to WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce and Wix. More in Square Online.
On bank payments, Stripe’s ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5. Square’s API ACH is 1% with a $1 minimum and a $5 cap, and Square lists $0 fees for ACH deposited into Square Checking. Outside Square Checking, a $200 payment costs $1.60 at Stripe and $2.00 at Square; from $625 up, both hit the $5 cap.
For invoicing, Square includes unlimited invoices, estimates and contracts on every plan, Free included; a card-paid invoice costs 3.3% + 30¢ on Free or 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium. Stripe Invoicing Starter adds 0.4% per paid invoice to Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ card rate, which lands at the same 3.3% + 30¢ as Square Free; Square Plus comes in 0.4 points lower per invoice, before its $49 monthly fee. See Square Invoices.
Do Square or Stripe Have Contracts or Hidden Fees?
Neither charges you to leave on standard pricing. Square lists no locked-in contracts and no fee for activation, PCI compliance support, account inactivity or early termination. Stripe lists no setup, monthly or closure fees.
The fine print differs in three places:
- Disputes: Square lists no chargeback or dispute fee. Stripe charges $15 per dispute received (in rare cases, network fees also apply), plus $15 to counter one manually (refunded if you win). See our chargebacks guide.
- Refunds and lost disputes: Stripe charges no fee to refund a card payment but keeps the original processing fee. Square keeps a payment’s processing fee when the customer wins a dispute; its refund-fee policy wasn’t on the pricing pages we checked, so ask before you assume either way.
- Locations: Square Plus and Premium bill per location, so three stores on Plus is $147 a month. Square Free adds locations at no extra cost.
Stripe’s standard Payments and Terminal pricing is pay-as-you-go with no closure fee. Some add-ons also offer annual plans with a 1-year contract, such as Billing’s monthly-paid annual plan from $620 a month and Tax Complete from $90 a month, though Billing also has a pay-as-you-go option at 0.7% of billing volume. Read add-on terms before you accept.
Square vs Stripe: Which Businesses Should Pick Which?
Square is the wrong tool for an online-only business whose developers want fine control over checkout and billing, or for anyone who needs multi-currency. Stripe is the harder fit if you want to unbox a register and start ringing sales, or need kitchen tickets, table service or inventory: on Stripe, those come from a POS app you build or a third-party POS you connect (restaurant owners, see our Square vs Toast comparison). And since we don’t sell or support Stripe, there’s no Dallas / Ft. Worth setup help from us on that side.
- Pick Square if you run a restaurant, coffee shop, food truck, boutique, salon or service counter and want a POS without hiring a developer. See Square for Restaurants and Square for Retail.
- Pick Square if you sell in person and online from one synced item library, or your average in-person ticket runs $100 or more.
- Pick Stripe if your business lives in your own website or app (subscriptions, software, marketplaces) and you have a developer.
- Pick Stripe if you sell across borders or want Klarna or stablecoin payments at checkout.
- Pick Stripe if you run tiny tickets at high volume on card readers running POS software already built for Stripe Terminal; the 10¢ you save on each sale’s fixed fee adds up.
How Do You Switch From Stripe to Square, or Run Both?
You may not have to choose. You can keep Stripe on your website or app and run Square at the counter, with two dashboards and two payout streams to reconcile. To move in-person sales to Square, here’s the order we follow:
- 1. Pull your numbers. Export a few months of Stripe reports and split volume by in person, online, keyed and invoiced.
- 2. Price it. Run that volume through Square Free, Plus and Premium at Square’s published rates.
- 3. Pick hardware. Terminal for a counter that prints receipts, Handheld for tableside or the sales floor, Register for a busy counter, Stand or Kiosk for iPad setups.
- 4. Build the item library. Items, modifiers, taxes, tipping and team permissions go in first; Square Online can import items from Square POS.
- 5. Test, train, go live. Run test sales on every device, then keep Stripe on until Square shows a clean week. Stripe lists no closure fee. Our guide to switching payment processors has a fuller checklist.

Frequently asked questions
Is Square or Stripe better for a small business?
For most small businesses that sell face to face, Square is simpler: the POS app comes with every plan, Square sells its own registers and terminals at published prices, and setup needs no developer. Stripe fits better when your sales happen inside your own website or app and someone can build on its APIs.
Stripe vs Square processing fees: which is cheaper?
It depends on ticket size and channel. In person on card readers, Stripe Terminal is 2.7% + 5¢ and Square is 2.4% to 2.6% + 15¢ by plan, so Stripe is cheaper on sales under $100 against Square Free (under $50 against Plus and about $33 against Premium, before monthly fees) and pricier above that. Online, Stripe, Square Plus, Square Premium and Square’s APIs all charge 2.9% + 30¢; Square Free charges 3.3% + 30¢. Rates checked October 2026; confirm current pricing.
Can Stripe replace a Square POS for in-person sales?
It can take the payments: Stripe lists readers from the $59 M2 to the $329 T600 (Verifone prices aren’t published) and charges 2.7% + 5¢ per in-person card sale on its readers, 10¢ more with Tap to Pay. The POS software is the real question. Stripe’s approach is to build your own app, connect a third-party POS or use its no-code option, while Square’s POS app, with restaurant, retail and services modes, comes with every plan.
Square vs Stripe vs Clover: how do the three compare?
Square and Clover are both point-of-sale systems built for selling at a counter, so they compete head to head; Stripe leans toward online and app-based payments. We offer and support both Square and Clover, and our Square vs Clover comparison covers pricing, hardware and contracts. If you’re online-first with a developer, Stripe deserves a look.
Which pays out faster, Square or Stripe?
Square’s standard transfers arrive as soon as the next business day at no charge; instant and same-day transfers cost 1.95% (instant up to $10,000 per transfer); new sellers start at one instant transfer a day of up to $2,000. Stripe’s standard payouts are free, and Instant Payouts cost 1.5% (50¢ minimum). Stripe’s standard timing wasn’t on the pages we checked, so ask.
Do I need a developer to use Stripe?
Not for the basics. Stripe says you can set up billing, take in-person payments or share a payment link right from its Dashboard with no code. Its real strength is custom work, such as building your own checkout or POS app. If you want a full point of sale running without development, Square is usually the faster path.
